WEEKLY RECAP

Week ending 4 Sep 2026

The markets whose week stood out against their own history, and what is coming next.

ADSK −16.4%, UNP −5.8% and 3 more · Weekly Recap 4 Sep 2026

A quieter week than most. No market on the board had a week that read Very High or Max against its own history, and only Autodesk reached High. The five here are the biggest moves the week produced, each sized against that market's own record rather than by the raw percentage.

The thread running through the list is software. Autodesk fell over 16% on the week. Its results on 27 August beat expectations, but the profit outlook for the next quarter came in below hopes, and the slide deepened on Friday when a wider sell-off hit software names on fears that AI could eat into their business. Cadence Design Systems fell 14% in the same sell-off, with its chief executive on television this week saying the company had been caught up in it.

Away from software, Deere rose 10% to a record high after Baird upgraded the stock. Union Pacific slid almost 6% from the record it set the week before, with the regulator's review of its Norfolk Southern merger still hanging over it. In currencies the yen had its best week in a month as traders bet on a Bank of Japan rate rise at its meeting later this month, which pulled the euro down 2.4% against it.

The moves that mattered

Sized against each market's own history, not by raw percentage — so a quiet market moving 3% can outrank a wild one moving 9%.
